Two more Vocational Training Courses

Dept of Continuing and Adult Education   of the SNDT University (the pioneer University exclusively for Women) Mumbai has agreed to conduct two courses for the rescued girls and young women residents of the at Pratishtha centre of Prerana CBD Belapur in collaboration with Prerana. The first one month long residential course in advanced embroidery will start on 28th June 2007. The second course is a 5 month long residential course in Health Care giving which will start soon.


Second batch in Real Diamond Jewelry making:  A diamond jewelry manufacturing and exporting company from Mumbai which had given 3 months long 'on job training' for a batch of 7 rescued girls  initiated & coordinated by Prerana and who subsequently absorbed them in its workforce as regular employees has volunteered to take a second batch of trainees from Prerana.


Experience Sharing Residential Camp for Rescued Girls and Young Women: A 4 days long residential camp for rescued trafficked victim girls was organized by Prerana at J J Nursing Association campus, Aksa beach, Marve, Mumbai between 15th and 18th June 2007. In all 64 rescued minor girls participated in the Camp, 34 among them were minors from the state government's Special Home Deonar and 2 majors from the Govt. Protective Home Chembur. Others included residents of shelter homes of Prerana, St Catherine, and Navajyoti. 30 campers were either doing their education through National Open School or working. Five girls have been working with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

Five girls from the 1st batch now the employees of that firm participated from the evening of Friday 15th June to the night of Sunday 17th June in Camp. They expressed immense job satisfaction and specifically mentioned that they receive very decent treatment at workplace. The owner of the firm has been very careful about the confidentiality principle.

The working girls shared their experiences which encouraged the newly rescued minor girl  residents of the other participating shelter homes. Besides handling issues of social reintegration the Camp focused on anger management, gender equality, and women' legal & human rights. Ms. Priti Patkar and Ad Ms Maharukh Adenwala handled the substantive sessions while in other sessions the working girls shared their experiences. Detailed process report will follow.

The Camp was held through sponsorship from the US Govt.and UNIFEM - South Asia Regional Office, New Delhi.


Prerana starts one more Group Home: Prerana has managed to start one more group Home for the rescued and rehabilitated girls as an advanced stage of social reintegration. Mr. Pravin Patkar, Ms. Priti Patkar and Ms. Aparna Dhopeshwarkar of Prerana visited the proposed rental place on 20th June 07 and finalized the terms and conditions of the tenure. The Group Home is located in Mulund which will be shared by 7 working girls. The group Home will be through the sponsorship from UNIFEM SARO and CRS. Prerana and Our Children have been jointly working on popularizing the concept of Group Home as an After Care arrangement for the girls graduating from institutional life (shelter facilities). The initial experiments are quite encouraging.


10th Std results are out: The highest scorer among the 10th std students (children shifted from red light districts and placed by Prerana in various institutions for residential care and education) a resident of Snehasadan Mumbai secured 70 % marks.


NGO Bazar: An NGO Bazar was facilitated by Indian NGOs.com for the employees of MASTEK Mumbai at Mahape, Navi Mumbai on 21st June 07. Prerana received a very encouraging response from the visitors. Ms. Aileen Marquese, Ms. Kalpana and Ms. Praneeta managed the Prerana stall where besides giving information to the visitors the Pratishtha girls managed a small scale sale of garments and artificial jewelry the products of Pratishtha.
